Speculation is running wild that Marvel Studios is looking to hire "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly" creator to direct the upcoming "Avengers" film. Whedon has played a big part in the comic industry in the last few years with writing gigs on "Astonishing X-Men", "Runaways", and his launch of "Buffy: Season 8" At one point Whedon was contracted to write and direct a "Wonder Woman" film for Warner Brothers. The movie never happened but now it seems that Joss Whedon could be bringing "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" to the big screen soon.

Marvel Animation has announced that it will be bringing a new series based on "Ultimate Spider-Man" for Disney XD in 2011. This comes after the news that Sony gave up the rights to do an animated Spider-Man series. Which means you won't be seeing any "Spectacular Spider-Man" anytime soon.

WonderCon took place over the weekend in San Francisco. DC broke two big stories during their panels. First we found out that All-Star Batman was actually a prequel to Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns." This explains why that Batman was such a psycho! Now "All-Star Batman and Robin" has been canceled but will relaunch as "Dark Knight: Boy Wonder." The series will be six issues and come from the creative team of Frank Miller and Jim Lee. The first issue is expected to be released February 2011. Yes that's right, next year.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another big story that broke over the weekend was the exiting of Greg Rucka from DC comics. If you're a Marvel Comics fan, don't get too excited. As of right now Rucka has only expressed his desire to work on his "Queen and Country" series. DC claims to still have big plans for Batwoman and would love to have Rucka as the writer behind these plans, but it does not seem likely to happen in the near future. At this time there has been no announcement concerning J.H. Williams as the artist of any upcoming Batwoman stories.

Spider-Man will be swinging into game consoles this year with a new game titled "Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions." In the game you will play as four different Spider-Man's from four different universes. Announced so far are "Classic Spider-Man" and "Noir Spider-Man". As "Classic Spidey" you will search the jungles for Kraven the Hunter. "Noir Spider-Man" will be facing off with Hammerhead. The other two Spider-Man's will be announced at this year's E3. Strong rumors are suggesting "Zombie Spider-Man" and "1602 Spider-Man". The game's story was written by fan favorite Dan Slott.

In movie news, actor Sebastian Stan has signed a five film deal with Marvel Pictures. Stan will be playing Bucky Barnes in the upcoming "The First Avenger: Captain America." With the announcement that Stan has signed for five films, insiders are already suggesting that we may see The Winter Soldier sometime down the line. "The First Avenger: Captain America" stars Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America.

During WonderCon a fan asked Geoff Johns about any news regarding a "Justice League" movie. Johns said that at the current time he wasn't able to talk about it, but will be able to at this years San Diego ComicCon. Does this mean that the upcoming "Green Lantern" film is the first step in a "Justice League" movie? We will find out this summer!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, it appears that Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan are officially out of the "Red Sonja" movie. This leaves the film with no star or director. Rumored to be up for the part of Red Sonja is Megan Fox, naturally. No directors have been named at this time.

It looks like we finally know who will be portraying Captain America! Chris Evans has landed the role and apparently just has to sign his contract to play Steve Rogers in up to nine movies. Thankfully we'll never get to see a crossover between Fox's 'Fantastic Four' and Paramount's 'Avengers' or things could get a little confusing. ;)

While we could post news regarding casting for "The First Avenger: Captain America" movie nearly everyday, it'd feel a little redundant. So here's the latest list of names up for the part of Steve Rogers: Channing Tatum (Step Up, Dear John, G.I. Joe), Ryan Phillippe (Cruel Intentions, Igby Goes Down), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Cellular, Push), Mike Vogel (She's Out of My League, Cloverfield, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003), Wilson Bethel (The Young and the Restless), and Garrett Hedlund (Eragon, Friday Night Lights). Casting rumors are starting to begin for the part of either Peggy Carter or Betsy Ross. In the running so far for the lead actress are Keira Knightley (do we really need to remind you what she's been in? just a little flick called Pirates of the Caribbean), Alice Eve (She's Out of My League), and Emily Blunt (Wolfman, The Devil Wears Prada). There should be official announcements very soon with who actually gets the parts.

The Avengers are coming back in a big way in May. Already announced is the new Avengers series by Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita Jr. Marvel has released the first five members of this team being Captain America (Bucky), Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Spider-Woman. The new series starts in May. Expect more members to be announced before then. Also expect an announcement that Romita will only be drawing the first story arc.

Secret Avengers was also announced by Marvel. Not much is known about the series at this time other than it will feature the creative team of Ed Brubaker and Mike Deodato. Currently Marvel is only releasing teasers as to who will make up this secret team.

Everyone should know by now that Ryan Reynolds will be portraying Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern movie. Blake Lively, of Gossip Girl fame, was recently cast as Carol Ferris, Hal's love interest. There are some fun rumors floating around on who will play the films villain but we'll leave that bit for our Rumors page until it's official. Martin Campbell (Edge of Darkness, Casino Royale) is directing the movie which is scheduled to be released on June 17, 2011.

Well it didn't take long for Spider-Man 4 to find Sam Raimi's replacement. Sony announced that Marc Webb will be directing the next trilogy of films. In my opinion, he's best known for directing Green Days music video for "Waiting." Although his film "(500) Days of Summer" is supposedly really good. Hopefully Sony didn't pick him because of his last name. ;)

January 13th, 2010
The Spider-Man 4 movie has just been turned upside down. Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and crew have parted ways with Sony, Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios. The new Spider-Man 4 will be based on a script by James Vanderbilt and will hit theaters in 2012, a year later than originally planned. Also of note, it sounds like this "new beginning" will be just that, a new beginning, as in starting over from the beginning.

Let's start off the new year with some news you really, really, should already know. Shareholders have voted in favor of the merger between Marvel and Disney. 2010 should be exciting, to say the least.
